When someone says stained glass, what's the first thing you picture?
For a lot of people, it's a big, colorful church window.
And while those windows are beautiful, stained glass has a much bigger place in decorating than you might think.
Stained Glass Has Been in Homes for Generations
Stained glass isn't a new decorating trend.
You'll find it in old Victorian homes, Craftsman houses, antique doors, vintage cabinets, and homes built during the mid-century era.
And the styles are completely different.
Some pieces are detailed and traditional. Others are bold, geometric, and surprisingly modern.
That's one of the things I love about stained glass. It works with so many different styles.
It Doesn't Have to Be Traditional
Personally, I'm drawn to stained glass with strong shapes, interesting textures, and unexpected color combinations.
I love the look of mid-century geometric designs, but I also enjoy making birds, stars, trees, and other pieces inspired by nature.
Not everything needs to be a rose or a butterfly.
And not everything needs to match the colors in your living room.
Sometimes a little unexpected color is exactly what a space needs.
Small Pieces Can Make a Big Difference
You don't need a huge stained glass window to enjoy it.
A small sun catcher in a kitchen window can be just as beautiful.
A handmade star can catch the afternoon light. A colorful bird can brighten up a plain window. A tabletop piece can add something interesting to a bookshelf.
I especially like pieces that are easy to move around.
You can enjoy them in different rooms, change them with the seasons, or give them as gifts.
Why Handmade Stained Glass Makes a Great Gift
One of the nice things about stained glass is that it feels personal without having to be customized.
You can choose a cardinal for someone who loves birds, a Texas shape for someone proud of their home state, or a colorful star for someone who appreciates handmade art.
And unlike flowers or candles, it's something they can keep enjoying year after year.
A Little Color Goes a Long Way
At Narrow Gate, we love things with character. Vintage finds, handmade pieces, interesting colors, and items that don't look like everything else on the shelf.
Stained glass fits right into that.
It doesn't need to be formal, traditional, or expensive to be beautiful.
Sometimes all it takes is a little glass and the right light.
